Luke 13:6 “He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. 7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? 8 And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: 9 And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.”

 

Let’s face it, New Year’s resolutions have the shelf life of ice cream left in the trunk of your car in Florida during August. Millions of people have resolved to smoke their last cigarette, lose 10 pounds, pay off their credit cards, spend more time with their kids, get on the treadmill, put something in savings, call their mother more often, drive slower, sleep longer, and live better. Though millions of resolutions are made, unfortunately, for most people another year will not make all that much of difference in how they live their lives. Sadly, for most Christians another year won’t change much in their lives either! The owner of the vineyard (and the tree) had been checking the progress of this particular fig tree, but had been annually disappointed in the fact that it had produced no figs. When we make application of this parable, we are reminded that whether you realize it or not, God has planted you in this world to please Him, and to bring glory to His Son, the Lord Jesus. God doesn’t exist for your pleasure. It is the other way around. I wonder if the dear Lord is disappointed when He checks our lives. Maybe there is very little fruit to be seen in our lives.
